About the Trip

Tucked beneath the towering Minkiani Pass, the Lam Dal Lake Trek is more than just a trail β€” it's a sacred journey across seven mystical lakes, with Lam Dal being the largest and most breathtaking of them all. Revered and untouched, this alpine gem outshines even the famed Chandratal and Brighu Lake in raw, untamed beauty.

Starting from the peaceful villages of Kareri and Salli, the route winds through ancient forests, glacier basins, high-altitude meadows, and timeworn Himalayan hamlets. Along the way, nature unveils itself in its purest form β€” with wildflowers underfoot, pine-scented air, and valleys that stretch into the clouds.

Whether it’s the burst of green in summer or the mystical mist of monsoon, this trek offers a rare blend of spiritual calm and thrilling adventure. The path may be rugged, but the reward is serenity and the kind of silence only the mountains can offer

Itinerary

Day 01: Dharamshala to Kareri Village Drive (30 km) + Trek to Kareri Lake (10 km)
Altitude: ~2,934m | Trek Duration: 4–6 hours

Your adventure begins early β€” report in Dharamshala by 8 AM, where a scenic 2-hour drive winds you through pine-scented roads to the quaint Himalayan village of Kareri. After a quick gear check and local breakfast, we hit the trail around 10 AM.

The trek begins gently, weaving through charming forest paths lined with Oak, Rhododendron, and Chir Pine. The terrain soon shifts into a more rugged ascent as we follow the rhythmic flow of the Kareri Nyund Stream, a crystal-clear rivulet that will keep you company for much of the journey β€” crossed via rustic wooden bridges that feel straight out of a fairytale.

As you gain altitude, the air turns cooler, the views wider, and your connection with nature deeper. By late afternoon, you’ll emerge into a high alpine basin β€” and there it is: Kareri Lake, nestled like a sapphire at the foot of Minkiani Pass, its glacial waters reflecting the mighty Dhauladhars.

Pitch your tent by the lakeside, soak in the stillness, and let the night sky tell its own stories. Overnight stay in tents by the lake β€” under a canopy of stars, far from everything else that matters.

Day 02: Kareri Lake to Minkiani Pass to Lam Dal Lake (8 km | 5–6 Hours)
Altitude: ~4,328m | Trek Grade: Challenging

Today, the true test begins β€” as we leave behind the calm shores of Kareri Lake and ascend into the rugged, high-altitude wilderness of the Minkiani Pass. At an elevation of approximately 14,200 feet, this section is the most demanding yet deeply rewarding part of the journey.

The trail cuts through a stark, rock-strewn landscape, where vegetation gives way to towering snow-clad peaks and ancient glacier beds. The silence here is profound, broken only by the whisper of cold winds and distant waterfalls. As we climb, the scenery becomes otherworldly β€” dotted with hidden alpine springs, scattered crystal-clear lakes, and icy stream crossings that refresh your spirit.

Along the route, we pass Kali Kund, a sacred sister lake to Lam Dal, often visited by pilgrims during Shivratri, many of whom brave the path barefoot in reverence. Just beyond a massive boulder, Lam Dal Lake reveals itself β€” vast, shimmering, and steeped in myth. Revered as an abode of Lord Shiva, Lam Dal is the largest and most sacred of the Dhauladhar lakes, cradled in the arms of raw Himalayan grandeur.

Camp by its banks, surrounded by silence and sacredness β€” a place where nature and spirit exist as one.

Overnight stay in tents beside Lam Dal Lake.

Day 03: Lam Dal Lake to Kareri Lake (8 km | 5–6 Hours)
Altitude Drop: ~4,328m to ~2,934m | Trek Grade: Moderate to Challenging

The morning at Lam Dal greets you like a dream β€” the entire landscape wrapped in a blanket of silver mist, as if the mountains themselves are still asleep. Sounds carry eerily through the fog β€” the distant bleat of sheep, the bark of a dog β€” but everything remains hidden in the mystical quiet.

We begin our descent early, retracing our steps toward the Minkiani Pass. The climb back up is steep but direct, and soon our breath aligns with the rhythm of the mountains. To our right, snow-laced ridges rise silently; to the left, the valley falls away into a sea of clouds. The trail feels suspended between two worlds β€” one of stone and silence, the other of mist and movement.

As we cross back over Minkiani Pass, the terrain gently shifts and Kareri Lake slowly comes back into view β€” familiar, serene, and welcoming. By afternoon, we descend into its alpine basin once more, where our tents await beside its still waters.

Overnight stay at Kareri Lake, resting with memories of the high Himalayas still fresh in your mind.

Day 04: Kareri Lake to Kareri Village (10 km | 5–6 Hours) + Drive to McLeodganj
Altitude Drop: ~2,934m to ~1,900m | Trek Grade: Easy Descent

The final day begins with a peaceful farewell to the high mountains. As we leave Kareri Lake, the trail gently winds down alongside a lively gushing stream, its music guiding us back toward civilization.

With every step downhill, the landscape transforms. Alpine silence gives way to birdsong, and the forests of deodar and pine rise once more, welcoming us back into their emerald embrace. The air turns warmer, the colors more vivid, and the scent of the forest floor richer.

By afternoon, we reach Kareri Village, where your jeep awaits. Sit back and relax as we drive to McLeodganj, closing the loop on an unforgettable journey through high passes, hidden lakes, and sacred silence.

This is where the Minkiani Pass and Lam Dal Lake Trek ends β€” but the mountains stay with you, long after the road bends away
