About the Trip

Nestled deep within the Churah Valley of Chamba, Gadasru Mahadev Lake is a sacred glacial lake revered by locals. Believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali, this scenic lake lies at the base of the Gadasru Peak at an altitude of 11,500 feet. The annual pilgrimage begins from Devi Kothi Village and is held in September when devotees and trekkers alike journey through pine forests, meadows, and waterfalls to seek blessings.

Besides its religious significance, the trek offers stunning alpine landscapes, serene campsites, and a deep immersion in Himachali mountain culture

Itinerary

πŸ—“οΈ Day 1: Devi Kothi β†’ Chandru β†’ Kaonot Ridge (Overnight Camp)

  • Starting Point: ~1 km ahead of Devi Kothi Village
  • Trek Duration: 3–4 hours
  • Highlights: Forest trail, remote village, Kaonot ridge views

Begin the trek just outside Devi Kothi. An hour-long walk leads to the last inhabited village, Chandru. From here, a challenging but rewarding 45Β° ascent brings you to Kaonot Ridge in about 1.5–2 hours.

This ridge offers scenic views and is the ideal place to pitch tents for the night. Bonus: Mobile connectivity is available here, which is rare in the region.

πŸ—“οΈ Day 2: Kaonot β†’ Gugalala (Waterfall & Lake Viewpoint)

  • Trek Duration: ~4 hours
  • Highlights: Forests, meadows, alpine streams, Gugalala waterfall & lake

Start your day trekking through enchanting pine forests and open pastures. After around 4 hours, you’ll arrive at Gugalala, a breathtaking spot where a snow-fed waterfall meets a glacial lake in a serene alpine setting.

This area features flat meadows, ideal for resting and camping. During the pilgrimage season, community kitchens (Langars) are sometimes set up here, though availability varies due to the challenging terrain.

πŸ—“οΈ Day 3: Gugalala β†’ Gaurikund β†’ Gadasru Mahadev Lake β†’ Kali Mata Lake β†’ Return Begins

  • Trek Duration: ~3 hours to Gadasru Lake (+ return optional)
  • Highlights: Sacred lakes, stunning views, snow-capped peaks

The final leg begins with a three-hour climb to Gaurikund, a sacred lake dedicated to Goddess Parvati (Gauri Maa). After offering prayers and taking in the tranquil energy of this holy site, continue for another 15 minutes to reach Gadasru Mahadev Lake.

Surrounded by towering peaks and crystal-clear waters, Gadasru Lake is a place of spiritual and natural wonder. Nearby, you can take a short climb to visit Kali Mata Lake (also called Bhero Lake), often snow-covered and less visited, adding a mystical end to your journey.

You can begin your descent back to base the same day, or stay overnight and return comfortably the following day.
